In today’s fast-paced world, convenience is king. Whether it’s ordering your favourite coffee with a single tap or enjoying a hassle-free shopping experience, consumers crave simplicity. Amazon, a pioneer in revolutionising customer convenience, is at it again with its latest innovation: Amazon One.
What is Amazon One?
Amazon One is a fast, convenient, contactless identity service platform that uses your palm! You just hover to enter, identify, and pay!
On May 22, the tech giant unveiled the expansion of Amazon One. A scanner that uses palm recognition technology to facilitate payments without the need for physical wallets.
Customers simply place their palm over the contactless payment scanner to enter the store and pay Amazon.
Say Hello to a Streamlined, Wallet-free Experience!
Imagine going out for a night without worrying about your wallet or purse. Well, Amazon is making that a possibility with its company’s latest innovation—a “palm-based identity service” that allows you to pay for alcohol using just your hand.
Picture this: you’re heading out for a night on the town and realise you forgot your wallet at home. No worries! You can leave your worries behind with Amazon One’s palm-based identity service.
Or perhaps you’ve just done the school run, but you’ve left your purse at home, and you need that bottle of milk for that morning coffee after the rush. No need to worry about driving all the way home when you have Amazon One!
Age Verification Made Effortless
One of the most exciting features of Amazon One is its ability to verify your age seamlessly. Imagine strolling into a shop, a bar or attending a ballgame and effortlessly proving your eligibility to purchase alcohol. By registering your palm print and uploading a few identification photos, you can enjoy a smoother, more efficient age verification process. No more fumbling for IDs or engaging in lengthy conversations with bartenders. Cheers to simplicity!
The Coors Field Experience
To showcase, and test, the power of Amazon One, they partnered with Coors Field; home of the Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball team. At the stadium’s SandLot Brewery and Silver Bullet Bar, fans can witness the seamless integration of palm scanning technology. This exciting partnership between Amazon and the Colorado Rockies promises to enhance the game-day experience for avid fans.
Unlocking the Power of Biometrics
Amazon One is a biometric payment system platform that harnesses the power of palm prints. By using the unique patterns and characteristics of an individual’s palm, this technology provides secure and accurate identification. With the convenience of a simple hand gesture, customers can complete transactions effortlessly, removing the need for physical cards or mobile apps. Biometrics is the future of commerce, and Amazon One is leading the way.
The Amazon Legacy
Amazon’s commitment to customer convenience is deeply rooted in its history. In 1999, they introduced the groundbreaking concept of One-Click ordering, which ended the frustrations of cart abandonment and transformed online shopping.
With Amazon One, they continue this legacy, striving to provide an effortless checkout experience both in-store and beyond. Retailers and brands worldwide can join this revolution and enhance their brands and customers’ shopping journeys.
The rise of Amazon One marks a significant milestone in the realm of effortless payments.
By leveraging the power of palm scanning and biometrics, Amazon is reshaping and changing how we make purchases for the better. Amazon offers the tools, expertise, and technology to create a new way for companies, designers, and brands to access existing and new potential customers.
While Amazon One may pose challenges for businesses, the potential rewards regarding streamlined sales processes and increased customer satisfaction at the checkout counter make it a business opportunity worth exploring. Brace yourself for a future where palm scanning becomes the new norm, and payments/billing become as effortless as a wave of your hand.
How do I sign up to use this?
We have yet to see this in the UK. But if you’re in the US, it takes less than a minute to sign up at these Amazon Go stores using an Amazon One device. The first step is to insert your credit card. Next, hover your palm over the device and it will read it.
For age verification, you’ll upload a selfie and images of the front and back of your government-issued ID.
Amazon assures customers that it does not sell or store data on their IDs. The purpose is to streamline the age verification process when buying a drink. The scanner analyses the surface details of a person’s palm, displaying a “21+” message alongside a selfie of the customer.
Is an Amazon account required?
The signup experience is fast and lightweight, and you don’t need an Amazon account to sign up or start using Amazon One. Just a mobile phone number and credit card.
But if you choose to use your Amazon account with Amazon One, you can log in to the website to securely manage and control your information. Plus, see your usage and sales history.
What is the device scanning when it creates my unique palm signature?
When you hold your palm over the Amazon One device, the technology evaluates multiple aspects of your palm. No two palms are alike. Making your palm unique.
The retail giant began rolling out its Amazon One biometric device in Amazon Go stores in Seattle in September 2020. And unveiled its Dash Cart self-checkout shopping trolleys in some stores in July of the same year. Coffee shop and bakery chain Panera Bread enabled contactless palm payments using Amazon One technology at selected outlets in March. Customers at a Whole Foods Market store in Seattle USA, can now gain access to the supermarket and pay for their purchases using Amazon’s contactless palm scanning device.
Amazon One is a fast, convenient, contactless way for people to use their palm to make everyday activities like paying at a shop, presenting a loyalty card, and entering a stadium effortless.
